The Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 2024 at the UN Headquarters in New York, is poised to be a landmark event aimed at laying new foundations for stronger and more effective global cooperation. In preparation for the Summit, Member States and other key stakeholders have shared their visions and priorities, articulating clear expectations for tangible, action-oriented outcomes.

Conceived as a key milestone in the global effort to address contemporary challenges, this Summit seeks to reshape the future of international collaboration. It sets the stage for a future marked by more robust, responsive, and inclusive multilateral mechanisms.

This high-level event will bring world leaders together to forge a renewed international consensus on delivering a better present and securing a sustainable future. The urgency for effective global cooperation is more critical than ever, yet increasingly difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust and with outdated structures that no longer reflect the current political and economic realities.

The Summit provides a pivotal moment to rebuild trust and demonstrate that international collaboration can effectively meet agreed goals and address emerging threats and opportunities.

At the United Nations, world leaders will convene to adopt the Pact for the Future, which will include the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations as annexes. The Summit's objectives are twofold: to accelerate efforts in fulfilling existing international commitments and to take concrete steps in responding to new challenges and opportunities.

The Pact for the Future, an action-oriented outcome document, will be negotiated and endorsed by countries leading up to and during the Summit in September 2024. The outcome will be a world, and an international system, better equipped to address current and future challenges—for the benefit of all humanity and for generations to come.

In the context of preparation for the Summit, the ICSW submitted a statement to the High-level meeting of ECOSOC held in July 2024. The statement is available to view here.
