The
Commission for Social Development (C soc D) and the Preparatory
Committee for the High Level Meeting on Financing for Development
(FfD) are both taking place in New York during the weeks of February
12 and 19. ICSW will have a small team at both events.
The
aim of ICSW's involvement in the Commission for Social Development
and the Financing for Development process has been to influence
the views of national governments and the UN system to ensure
that issues that ICSW has identified through its many regional
and sub-regional meetings over the past five years are included
in the documents and debates being discussed in the two forums.
The
Commission for Social Development will be discussing:
- Enhancing
social protection and reducing vulnerability in a globalizing
world,
- The
role of volunteerism in the promotion of social development,
- The
multi-year programme of work of the Commission for 2002-2006.
The
FfD Prep Com will be discussing the four different chapter headings
identified for the High-Level event, namely:
- Mobilizing
domestic financial resources for development
- Mobilizing
international resources for development: foreign direct investment
and other private flows and Trade
- Increasing
international financial cooperation for development through
inter alia ODA and Debt
- Addressing
systemic issues: enhancing the coherence and consistency of
the international monetary, financial and trading systems in
support of development
The
FfD Coordinating Secretariat has held regional meetings for Africa,
Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean,
the Middle East, as well as NGO and Private Sector "Hearings"
in New York. There will be a further Prep Com in May 2001 and
another in January 2002. The date and venue of the High Level
event itself have yet to be decided.
ICSW was represented at the NGO Hearing and produced a paper on
taxation reform and its benefits for mobilizing domestic financial
resources for development. ICSW has also produced a proposal for
an Anti-Poverty Pact (to be found under the publications section
of this website). These two documents will form the basis of our
lobbying for the FfD Prep Com.
ICSW
has organised a number of different events during the two weeks.
